Sonja Mutić is a serbian–croatian composer and sound artist. She works with sounds at thresholds of silence, harmony and noise, using minimal means to create textures of maximal expressive weight. She is interested in slowness, artistic self-exposure and vulnerability.
Sonja earned her PhD in Composition at Harvard University in 2025, studying with Chaya Czernowin and Hans Tutschku. She also completed her Master’s studies in Composition at Harvard University, postgraduate studies in Composition at Kunstuniversität Graz, and a Master’s degree in Composition at the University of the Arts in Belgrade.
She is the winner of numerous composition awards and residencies, including the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin program (2023-24), George Arthur Knight Prize, Harvard University (2025, 2024, 2023), Adelbert W. Sprague Prize, Harvard University (2021, 2019), Hildegard Competition (2020), impuls prize (2019), Styria-Artist-in-Residence Graz (2018), Judith Lang Zaimont Prize (2017), Sigismund Toduţă (2017), Weimarer Frühjahrstage für zeitgenössische Musik (2016), Young Composers Meeting (2014), Künstlerhaus Boswil artist-in-residence (2014-15), pre–art (2013), Josip Slavenski (2011).
Her music was performed by ensembles Klangforum Wien, Nadar, United Instruments of Lucilin, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Vertixe Sonora, Elision, Studio Dan, Cairn, National Sawdust, Constellation Chor, Schallfeld, Ensemble for New Music Tallinn, Studio 6, Orkest de Ereprijs, pre-art and Fractales amongst others, with performances at impuls festival, Lucerne Festival, Gaudeamus Muziekweek, International Rostrum of Composers, November music, Music Biennale Zagreb, Steiermark Schau, SONEMUS, Festival ensemble(s), 33.7, MusicOlomouc, KotorArt, impuls Minuten Konzerte, Culturescapes, LBO Songbook UnGalas, Echofluxx, mise-en, International Review of Composers etc.
Sonja is currently based in Berlin.
